Style sheets exist, above all, to enable the following principle to be put into practice.

As a developer this means that the information in your web site should go into your HTML files, but HTML files should not contain information about how that information is displayed. And you've probably guessed by now that information about how the pages should appear goes into CSS files.

The traditional HTML approach was to "hardcode" all of the appearance information about a page. So you want all your headings in courier, and at different point sizes to the sizes built into browsers? Then, for every heading, in every page, set the font size and face properties. You've got more than 100 pages? That is a lot of editing, and a lot of re-editing if you decide to modify the appearance of your pages later. And with all of that editing there is plenty of possibility for introducing errors.

With CSS, you can decide how headings should appear, and enter that information once. Every heading in every page that is linked to this style sheet now has that appearance. Want to make every heading of level 3 more obviously different from those of level 2? Edit the style sheet, and every such heading now has the altered appearance. How many hours' work (and potential errors) have you just saved?

Another major advantage involves the management of large, sophisticated sites. With cascading style sheets, whole organizations can share a small number of style sheets, ensuring consistency across the site with no need for constant updating and editing to accommodate changes. Take a moment to reflect on what you know about fashion magazines. Shimmering covers, lengthy mastheads, tons of pages (that are mostly ads) and newsstand prices between $3 and $5. Now, forget what you know about fashion magazines. Or magazines in general.

Meet Visionaire, the ultimate un-magazine. Visionaire is not glossy. It does not contain ads. Rarely does it have articles or use text at all. Sometimes, there are no pages; the magazine’s latest issue, entitled “Scent,” consisted solely of a white leather case packed with forty-two fragrance- filled vials bearing names such as Electricity, Drunk and Noise.

Those seeing the magazine for the first time will react with wonder and ask, “What is it?” More or less a quarterly publication (sometimes it comes out only three times a year), Visionaire has been deftly blurring the boundaries between art, books and periodicals since its inception in 1991. A different format and theme are conceived for each issue, and worldfamous artists, photographers and fashion designers are commissioned to create the magazine’s original works.

For Issue No. 24, “Light,” the Visionaire team brought aboard Tom Ford of Gucci fame to create the world’s first battery-operated publication: a fully functional light box with twenty-four transparencies of fine art. Issues of Visionaire No. 38, “Love,” contained vintage romance novels that were inserted with silver-pendant bookmarks by Italian jewelry designer Elsa Peretti, then packed into an iconic Tiffany blue box. So coveted was the No. 18 “Fashion Special,” which highlighted the world’s most influential designers through photography, that it sold out before the launch party.

With veteran fashion photographers like Mario Testino and David LaChappelle behind the camera, Visionaire’s images are captivating, managing to span the spectrum from bawdy to tender. But this magazine excels in providing an experience that is as sensory as it is visual and uses more than paper in its production. Materials incorporated in past issues include denim, velvet, mylar, wood, foil and Plexiglas. Tossing the magazine’s mailer in the trash isn’t an option, either. Far from the plastic shrink wrap that sheaths other magazines, copies of Visionaire have come encased in custom- made Hermès pouches and leather Louis Vuitton portfolios.

However visionary Visionaire’s founders Stephen Gan, James Kaliardos and Cecilia Dean—friends since adolescence—were, they couldn’t have predicted the success of their venture thirteen years ago. They invented the magazine with only $7,000. These days, however, the trio’s brainchild has become a phenomenon in a Sotheby’s salesroom, where just one issue purportedly fetches thousands.

Ireland Spain Stamp Issue

Spanish Ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency Mercedes Rico on 6th of Nov launched the first joint stamp issue between Ireland and Spain celebrating popular dances from both countries.

The 55c Irish stamp features an illustration of an Irish dancer by Conor Walton with typography and layout by Design Tactics. The 82c Spanish design is based on a photograph of a flamenco dancer by Jesus Sanchez. Both stamps will appear on a miniature sheet issued jointly by An Post and Correos de Espana.

Philippe Starck designs deluxe objects and posh condos and hotels around the world. Always witty and engaged, he takes special delight in rethinking everyday objects.

Philippe Starck is a legend of modern design. He's known for his luxurious hotels and boites around the world -- notably the Peninsula Hotel restaurant in Hong Kong, the Teatron in Mexico, the Hotel Delano in Miami, the Mondrian in Los Angeles, the Asia de Cuba restaurant in New York -- designing the total environment from layout to furniture to linens.

But he has made perhaps his most permanent mark on design through his bold reworkings of everyday objects. In reimagining and rethinking the quotidian, he has produced some of the iconic shapes of the 20th century, including his leggy chrome juice squeezer , the reimagined Emeco aluminum chairs, and the witty Louis Ghost polycarbonate fauteuil.

Website navigation is the most important aspect to consider while designing a website. The primary aim for effective navigation is get your visitors to stay in your site and also for visitors to easily find what they are looking for easily and quickly. Designing effective navigation can also entice your visitors to try out the other things you offer on your site. In this article we will look at some of the basic guidelines you need to follow while designing the navigation of a website.

*Organized Links
Make sure your links are well organized according to the order of importance. Visitors should be easily able to find what they are looking for under different categories.

*Clear and Prominent
Once you have decided on your navigation links, you need to think of the best place to put them. Navigation should be clear and consistent. Try to design your navigation on the top or on the left as these are the first places our eyes go to. Also locate the primary links high enough on the page so that they are visible without scrolling. Navigation images should be seamlessly integrated into the site design. Avoid putting navigation links at the bottom of the page as visitors will need to scroll right down to see the links.

*Consistent
Navigation should be clear and consistent. The important links of your website should be on every page, in the same location, and in the same sequence. Don't confuse your visitors by putting your navigation links in different places in different pages.

*Easy to understand
Make your links easy to understand and to the point. Usually you won't have enough place to have long links so make use of the space wisely. Visitors need to know where they will go on clicking on a particular link, so make sure your links are understandable or nobody is going to click on your links, which will defeat the purpose of designing a good navigation system.

*DHTML Menus
If you have a large number of links under categories and sub-categories you could use navigation menus to organize your links.

What is featured here is a range of Typography artworks, or Digital art that has been created using Typography in its different forms as the main focus or structure. I came across these artworks whilst looking for some Typography inspiration in DeviantArt for a project I had was working on. I thought there was an incredible mix of talent here that needed to be shared with the wider community.

The inspirational collection here ranges from portraits made from just Typographic characters to abstract art design using 3D software and type elements. I have on occasion tried to replicate this type of artwork and I have found it to be very painstaking and time consuming. So I praise the artists who have managed to make these beautiful artworks and designs look so stunning and graceful.

Helvetica Movie Review

I watched the Helvetica movie today in class. Helvetica is the feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface, which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007, as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.

Having come across this movie in following a thread, I think the Helvetica font is overrated. I think the one thing that kept this movie from being horrendous was the visuals--most all of the shots in this film (minus some interview shots) are all really beautifully done and make this a really choreographed and beautiful documentary. it's to be expected though, being a movie about visual communication. The music was great too.

Introduction
Helvetica is the name of a widely used sans-serif typeface developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger.

Helvetica was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger (MEE-din-gurr) with Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas type foundry) of Münchenstein, Switzerland. Haas set out to design a new sans-serif typeface that could compete with Akzidenz-Grotesk in the Swiss market. Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, it was created based on Schelter-Grotesk. The aim of the new design was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, had no intrinsic meaning in its form, and could be used on a wide variety of signage.In 1960, the typeface's name was changed by Haas' German parent company Stempel to Helvetica — derived from Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin name for Switzerland — in order to make it more marketable internationally.

Alternative character sets
Helvetica Fractions contains only characters representing numbers, fractions, percentages.

Helvetica Central European contains only characters supporting letters found in Central European languages.

Helvetica Cyrillic contains only just enough characters supporting letters found in Basic Latin and Cyrillic code pages.

Helvetica Greek contains only just enough characters supporting letters found in Basic Latin and Greek code pages.

Helvetica World is a family of four fonts published by Linotype in 2002. It contains 1866 glyphs per font, supporting characters from Latin Extended, Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Arabic, superscripts and subscripts, letter-like symbols, arrows, mathematical symbols, box drawing, block elements, alphabetic presentation forms, Arabic presentation forms. Similar to Arial, Arabic glyphs do not have fixed weight within each glyph.

Styling variants
Helvetica Inserat is a redrawn version of Helvetica Black Condensed that gives the glyphs a more squared appearance, similar to Impact and Haettenschweiler. Strike with strokes in $, ¢ are replaced by non-strikethrough version. 4 is opened at top. Cyrillic characters are supported.

Helvetica Textbook contains monospaced version of the font. Some characters such as 1, 4, 6, 9, I, a, f, q, mu, and ¶ are drawn differently from the proportional space version.

Helvetica Rounded (1978) contains rounded stroke terminators. Only bold, bold oblique, black, black oblique, bold condensed, bold condensed, bold outline fonts were made, with outline font not issued in digital form by Linotype.

Swap Images
Swap images look fantastic and are also great fun to design, so try and use them if possible. Visitors find this interactive and interesting. Fireworks makes it very easy to design web sites with swap images.

Rollover Images
Rollovers are another favorite. I try to use rollovers whenever possible - they are extremely simple and add a bit of class to a web site. If you don't want to use too many images that will result in a slower load time make sure you use text rollovers.

DHTML
If you have sub menus or complex navigation systems, use DHTML. They look neat and are again very simple to use. Many sites offer free DHTML scripts for menus, navigation systems, tip boxes and more. They give you detailed instructions on how to use these scripts so it is really very easy to install. A good site is SimplyTheBest.

Flash
Though I don't recommend designing an entire site in Flash it may be a good idea to make an interesting Flash intro or insert small Flash animations in important pages of your site. Always take care to optimize your our Flash animations. Take a look at some great looking Flash intro animations.
